The Public Interest Oversight Board attended the 18th World Congress of Accountants in Kuala Lumpur, from November 8 to 11, hosted by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and the International Federation of Accountants.
During the event, three PIOB members participated in two of the daily sessions. PIOB Chairman Stavros Thomadakis commented on the Monitoring Group’s report on the 2003 IFAC reforms, during the session entitled The Monitoring Group Review. The other participants at this session included Hans Hoogervorst, the MG chairman and Gorän Tidström, the new president of IFAC. The MG is comprised of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the European Commission, the Financial Stability Board, the International Association of Insurance Supervisors, the International Organization of Securities Commissions, and the World Bank. It played an important role in introducing the reforms that gave birth to the PIOB in 2005.
PIOB board member Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Marten chaired the session Oversight Boards: The Global Experience and Learning, which also included the participation of Chairman Thomadakis as speaker. PIOB member David Brown chaired a session entitled The Essence of Audit Quality.
